Into the woods of Wisconsin

By Missy Wilson Oct 21, 2011

One of the toughest parts of our jobs as designers at Duffy is the exhaustive immersion that kicks off all of our projects. In the case of Canoe Bay, research meant a 2 day stay deep in the Wisconsin woods to truly understand and experience what makes Canoe Bay the special place that it is. After checking in, my husband and I took a walk through the property to discover deer, chipmunks and a certain kind of quiet. The lake on the property is pristine and is the centerpiece of Canoe Bay. Sprouting up around the lake were beautifully designed "cabins" in the Prairie style, all with spectacular views and inspired by the surroundings.

Each cabin had a journal for guests to share their thoughts, some wonderful insight as to the personal connection they have with this  place. People come here looking to disconnect from life, reconnect with themselves and each other, escape from the chaos of the everyday, to be still, to heal, to celebrate, to love and to just be. Everything was thoughtfully designed with this in mind: The most fabulous meals sourced from gardens on site, the structures created in harmony with the lake and land and the nature which in itself is a work of art.

Needless to say, our research was grueling. However, we left feeling like we experienced something very special and can't wait to articulate this through our design for Canoe Bay. Stay tuned.....

What others think:
