Since the
1480’s when Leonardo Da Vinci studied manned flight, individuals have had a
fascination with taking to the sky. On Saturday, July 24th 2010, Red
Bull sponsored their Flugtag event here in the Twin Cities.
Red Bull
Flugtag (“flying day” in German) is a competition that challenges both the
brave and the brainy to design, build and pilot homemade flying machines off a
30-foot high ramp in hopes of achieving human-powered flight.
There
were over 30 teams from the Twin Cities area participating, 200 applicants, and
over 90,000 on lookers. It was a stunning afternoon to watch the team Major
Trouble and the Dirty Dixies take home the world record-breaking distance, 207
feet.
Major
Trouble and the Dirty Dixies are new local hero’s. The team consists of
employees from Jersey’s Bar & Grill, a hangout in Inver Grove Heights, MN.
They set out on a mission to become champions and they more than succeeded. I
have never heard a crowd erupt in applause like they did that day after their
incredible victory.
Red Bull
Flugtag Twin Cities will also be featured in a reality series called “On the
Wings of Glory” airing Sundays after baseball starting September 5th on FOX
Sports Network.
