Joe & Joseph Speak @ Portfolio Center

By Joseph Duffy Feb 4, 2008

I once again had the pleasure of accompanying my father to visit and present our work and design process to students and staff at Portfolio Center in Atlanta. This was a whirlwind trip and our only regret was not having more time to spend there.

We arrived late Thursday night and were picked up by two students, John Parker and Mike Kelly. They brought us to a great Cuban restaurant called LaFonda for amazing fish tacos and Mexican beer. We were also set up in a very swanky hotel which was very much appreciated!

The next morning we woke up and headed to Portfolio Center, which is in a small warehouse space in Atlanta. I was first shocked at how small the school was. Hearing nothing but great things about the school prior to our visit, I had the impression that it was going to be much bigger. But it is true that dynamite comes in small packages. You could tell that great things were happening here as student work was displayed everywhere and it was very, very good.

We took a tour and checked out a wide variety of work from the current crop of students. We then met with Hank Richardson, the president. Talk about someone who is passionate about what he does! Hank is moving at a million miles a minute. So much so that he has two assistants whom I’m sure have the toughest job of all. . . Keeping Hank in check!

I was really inspired by the atmosphere at PC. It seemed to be a community of artists who strive to do great work. They also seemed to work in a collective environment not all that dissimilar from D&P. It was refreshing and inspiring.

For our presentation, we spoke for roughly an hour and a half and focused mostly on the current state of design as well as the process we use on every project that goes out the door at D&P. From research, concept, to finished design.

After the presentation, we were able to meet several students and then it was off to the airport to head back to our frozen tundra. It was a trip I won’t forget. I look forward to making it back to PC in the future and it's definitely a place we will keep our eye on for young design talent.

We would like to thank Hank and crew for inviting us down and for creating an atmosphere to allow young creative talent to blossom.
